IBM Research Chest X-ray AI Webinar

July 22, 2021  10:00 - 11:00 am EDT

The field of AI in radiology is rapidly evolving. Spearheading this revolution is the Medical Sieve Radiology Grand Challenge project at IBM Research. It pioneered the use of AI in radiology workflows, in collaboration with societies such as the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention (MICCAI). This exclusive webinar is planned by IBM Research to showcase the latest achievements of this project in chest radiology AI.

Chest radiographs are the most common imaging exams in hospitals and clinics, comprising 60% of x-rays in the US. They are also one of the hardest to interpret due to their low resolution in reflecting 2D projections of 3D volumes, and cognitive biases leading to interpretation errors. AI can be a valuable companion to radiologists to reduce bias and increase diagnostic throughput. AI assistance with automated preliminary reads can expedite clinical workflows.

In chest X-ray AI, the IBM Research team has developed the first system to produce a full-fledged preliminary read report directly from a chest radiograph that is both clinically and grammatically accurate in the fine-grained descriptions of findings. The underlying AI models cover the widest range of radiographic findings, including 78 coarse-grained and over 450 fine-grained findings, far exceeding the state of the art. Extensive evaluations through multi-institutional data clinical studies have shown comparable performance to radiologists in sensitivity and specificity with resulting reports virtually indistinguishable from manually composed reports.

The webinar will include a technical presentation by Dr. Tanveer Syeda-Mahmood, IBM Fellow and Global Imaging AI Leader at IBM Research, followed by a panel discussion where the following industry experts provide their perspectives on the features needed for AI algorithms in clinical workflows. There will also be time for Q&A and open discussion.
